[ CF: You'll have to get through me ]

Thanking her private driver, Pepper climbed out of the car in front of her building, hiding a yawn behind the back of her hand. He rolled down the window and called out to the Stark Enterprises Executive but she shook her head with a smile, assured him she wouldn’t need him again tonight and that he should go home and have a good evening. She added that he should say hi to his wife and he thanked her and drove away. She watched for a moment, considering that wandering up those few stairs into her apartment building was actually quite a lot of effort. Pepper was always nice to employees, she couldn’t understand how people could get so arrogant as to act otherwise, most people would absolutely despair without their assistants, cleaners, drivers, secretaries. It was quite silly to risk your morning coffee by being rude to them, besides, Pepper was a nice person. Even when she was tired from a 15 hour day at work (having arrived at 6am that day to deal with some international business) and stressed from a colossal (but fortunately rectified) mistake in accounting, Pepper liked to be nice.

Finally she headed into the building and even she had to admit as she smiled and nodded to her concierge, these Jimmy Choos were starting to hurt her feet. And by starting to, she of course meant they had been for the past three hours. Pepper was an expert in the art of wearing heels, and had no doubt she’d suffer for it in future, but she was already quite short and you couldn’t be caught in the company of Tony Stark looking anything other than pristine but you certainly needed to walk fast to keep up with him. Still she couldn’t wait to kick them off upstairs and wiggle her toes into her new plush carpet. Maybe she’d have a bath. She was exhausted but going straight to bed just meant she’d have to get up all the sooner to go back to work. Pepper debated it internally, wondering if she still had that leftover risotto in the fridge and reaching for the elevator button-

Her phone buzzed. Part of her sincerely wanted to just ignore it and not face anything else until the next day but that simply wouldn’t be Pepper Potts. She pulled it from her designer handbag and glanced to the screen. Tony. Of course it was. Emergency. Need you at Avengers Mansion. ASAP. Pepper groaned and tilted her head back but there really was never any question that she’d go. She turned on her painful heels and headed back towards the door. She rolled her eyes and lifted her phone in explanation, along with a tired smile, to the concierge, and he nodded sympathetically. On the road she managed to hail now a cab and climbed inside. Emergencies, when it came to Tony Stark, could range anywhere from getting out of a board meeting to currently entering a state of cardiac arrest and she really couldn’t risk that it wasn’t that important. Or at least she wouldn’t anyway. There were few people in the world with the patience for Tony Stark but then again, no one in the world knew him like Pepper did. The real Tony.

She tried to relax a little in the car but really achieved nothing with that as the red head freed her hair from its tight bun, which had given it soft waves and ran her hand through it, chewing her lip nervously. She just couldn’t turn her brain off. What if she reached Tony too late? No he’d never call her to a dangerous situation. But what was it then? Why couldn’t he ever tell her what the emergencies were? Blinking hard, Pepper sighed in relief as the mansion came into view. Thanking a driver for the second time that night, Pepper paid him and climbed from the car, already hitting 1 on her speed-dial to reach Tony as she walked towards the building. He'd been that speed-dial a very long time before they started seeing each other. It was rarely the need to call him quickly, that might be the case for him, but for Pepper it was the need to call him often - quite simply because sometimes the only way to get Tony to acknowledge a call was to do in ten times in the space of three minutes.
”Tony, its me, where are you? What’s the emergency?”

[ CF: Emergency Endeavors & Time Jump ]

Tony Stark hadn't left the Avengers Mansion in almost two weeks. This random turn of reclusive events was due in part for a number of reasons, the first being the unwanted negative media exposure. Since the Alpha Centaurian invasion and the Lizard incident Tony had been targeted more for questions and rebuttel than any of the other Avengers. He was also the singular most public. No one knew who the Hulk really was, and no one was going to be aware of the former S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives known as Hawkeye and Black Widow. Captain America could do no wrong in their eyes, and Rogers himself had a tendency of staying out of the limelight. He was there to be a hero, not a media monger. No, out of all the Avengers, both new and old, Tony was the one to take the brunt of such a verbal assault. The Avengers were called into question on their doings in saving New York, on how no one wanted to step up to take the blame for such destruction. In all honesty Tony thought it was more S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fault. Had Nick Fury told them about the terrifyingly powerful artifact they'd had under their lock and key things might have been different. What could would it have done anyway when someone as powerful as Loki had come in seeking to steal it. Tony remembered how much damage his armor had taken from that little exchanged, and how the Black Widow had been compromised by the God of Mischief. Thor wasn't telling them everything, probably hadn't told them everything, and since it seemed there were more and more superpowers showing up every day of the week, including in the form of mutants, well, that meant Tony wanted to keep his public image as close to his heart as possible.

The second most important reason he'd stayed at the mansion was to get work done. A new version of his armor was under wraps and while J.A.R.V.I.S. worked diligently on that after the initial programming of specifications, Tony went on a little errand. His suit was the best mode of transportation, and imagine the look on the florist's face when Iron Man waltzed into her store looking for a single white rose. Pepper had always looked her best in white and he really enjoyed it more than any other color (at least on her). He'd thought of the cliche red rose bouquet but knew she might appreciate the simple manner of what he'd had in mind. He'd also taken the time to set up a little "patio" for them to sit on upon the mansion roof. It was difficult to have a nice little sit-together when there were almost a dozen people living in the mansion. Tony had expected that when he'd built the damn place but at least it kept the Avengers' doings secret from S.H.I.E.L.D. (to some degree), and everyone could have their own private, personalized space. Tony had ignored his master bedroom for a change to the workshop beneath the mansion, just above the manufacturing floor. His little cot was still set up with messy blankets and pillows, and he'd all but had meals there every day of the week.

What he was working on was still kind of a mystery, even to the inventor.

That's when he'd had J.A.R.V.I.S. send a message to Pepper, alerting her to some emergency or other at the mansion in which she needed to come quick. It was after hours and she would be free, yes, but he didn't know how tired she was. If she was already asleep he'd have to postpone for another time. But the metal cylinder in his hand probably wasn't going to keep its contents as fresh as just out of the water. He'd have to get her attention somehow, even if that meant showing up outside her apartment window to take her to the mansion himself. Thankfully, as he was flying back from the florist she took the time to call him. It took him about three seconds to answer the call, his little earpiece helping him out while he kept his flight pattern in check. "Pepper. Hi. Emergency? Oh, right. That." He was doing this to keep her on the phone and distracted, circling around from the back of the mansion to the front where she stood. Not having gone in yet seemed a bit weird since she did have a code to the place, but he took it as a sign. Almost immediately he landed behind her, face-plate flipping up as he presented the little metal tube to her. "Something special happened and I wanted you here to see it. Thought you might like it." A pause, and then, "also, this is for you."

It still surprised Pepper sometimes how much Tony had gone in for the whole team Avengers thing. She had always known the brave, generous, protective Tony beneath the surface, even if sometimes he made it hard for even her to see, but until recently he really hadn’t been much of a team player kind of guy. Tony tended to push people away, and that wasn’t to say Pepper believed he was suddenly best buds and confidants with them all, but if he at least trusted them out there when they were in danger, then she was happy. Still, she was surprised when he’d moved into the Avengers mansion. She recognised the convenience of it, and sense of unity and all of that good stuff and she hoped Tony at least felt that a little. Pepper had her own code to get into the place but she certainly hadn’t moved in. Tony and her weren’t there yet, at least she didn’t think they were, and the red-head wasn’t about to push him of all people towards that. Besides she liked her flat, it was all neat and pretty and exactly how she liked it. Plus she imagined she’d get tired of small explosions and booming God voices reasonably quickly.

Walking towards the house, Pepper’s mind immediately went into handle-mode. It was like the executive could flip a switch in her head no matter how tired she most certainly was. Tony said emergency, so her mind returned to its alert, worried, micro-managing self that it had been before thoughts of baths or foot massages or sleep. People needed Pepper to be able to get things done at all hours so it was a rather good still she’d developed. Though of course the downside was that it came with constant worrying and more than its fair share of stress. Foot pain and neck ache left her mind. She frowned slightly, phone at her ear at Tony’s cavalier tone, still that didn’t necessarily mean they were out of the woods. He’d had a rather casual tone when he was going to cardiac arrest. She closed her eyes as she remembered it, please dear God don’t let it be that again. Pepper never wanted to have to deal with that again.

She took another step when she suddenly the metallic thud behind her and started, heart leaping up to smack into her sternum. She spun round and stared into Iron Man’s face a little wide-eyed. Her brows lifted as she waited to know what the emergency was. Why, why, was he in the suit? What had the emergency been? Was someone hurt? Had someone attacked the company? Was someone after Tony? She wouldn’t talk to him about it, he didn’t need that worry, but Pepper worried every time he put on that red and gold thing. What danger was he throwing himself at this time? The face plate lifting was maybe a good sign. If nothing else it was a sign she wasn’t in immediate danger, otherwise he tended to scoop her up and fly her away without pausing. It was both winding and absolutely terrifying!

”Tony-” She began but stopped, frowning, as he interrupted her – they had a long history of interrupting and talking over each other – and presented her with the metal tube. She arched a brow up at him in confusion and took it. If this was blue prints for something that could have waited until morning she was going to kill him! ”Something special, what are you talking about?” Pepper asked, unscrewing the tube and turning it over to catch the prints it her hand...but they weren’t prints. She stopped suddenly, sliding it out more carefully as the white rose fell into her palm. Already her muscles twitched her lips into a smile and she glanced up towards the billionaire. Urgh, he was infuriatingly lovable. Pepper lifted onto her toes a little, leaning forward and pressed a kiss gently to his lips, stress melting away....a little. Pepper was never entirely free of stress. It was a state that did not exist. If it did her bones would probably dissolve and she’d become a gelatinous mess. Very bad. “What’s this for?” She asked softly, glancing up to him with a smile.

It was true—generally when Tony donned the Iron Man armor it meant danger, run the other way! This was not one of those times. Explaining that to Pepper, who naturally was afraid of something bad following Tony as it was prone to do, would prove easier said than done. Or rather he didn't have to say anything at all; it really was that easy. She was going to get after him, he just knew it, for having given her an emergency message like the world was coming to an end. Luckily for him the rose did its job and got her to put the bigger picture into perspective. This wasn't about Tony Stark for once (maybe a little)—it was about them. He could feel that familiar swelling in his chest beneath the arc reactor that told him she was happy with what he'd gotten her, and seeing her smile was a gift he could have asked for in wrapping with bright paper on someone else. But on her it looked absolutely radiant. Tony wanted to say something but she had lifted herself up just enough to give him a kiss, one he returned as readily as she was handing it out. One of his arms wrapped around her waist, trying to keep her close to him as she pulled back to question his motives. "Why does it have to be for something? Can't I get you something nice to show you how much I care?"

Maybe not. Tony never really did anything unless he had something else in mind or to go along with it. That was all the encouragement he really needed to shrug in the armor, looking up for just a second trying to find something to throw her off the scent of his trail. Nah, she wouldn't fall for it anyway. "Okay it is for something." Not a moment later the faceplate closed and he added, "this." His arm tightened around her to keep her safe as the repulsors fired to lift them off the ground, aiming straight up (at a more manageable speed for her to stand instead of getting absolutely scared out of her normally stress-filled mind), and set down gently on the rooftop of the mansion. He'd gone through all the trouble of making it a surprise but he just couldn't put it off anymore. Luckily for her that rose had a nice little place in a small vase on the center of a table if she wanted to at least relinquish it for a while.

Oh, that table? It was a small one set in front of a small couch slash probably cot-thing he'd gone through all the trouble of putting together himself. Tony could get creative for the most mundane of things but even Pepper knew he didn't have a clue what his Social Security number was. And on top of that he'd put a bucket with ice and champagne up there too. Maybe they could order out; make someone bring them the food on the roof. Thor seemed good enough to fly. Maybe Ms. Marvel. Either way Tony had done this for Pepper and if she saw that he would be more than willing to admit there was a little for himself in there as well. He just had to get out of his suit first, and this wasn't Stark Tower. That meant he'd need to go down a level to get J.A.R.V.I.S. to take the damn thing off so he could be comfortable. Temperatures were in the somewhat mid-sixties (almost close to winter and all that), and he had to get a blanket for her anyway. "Mind having a seat? I need to go freshen up. Lose the metal." Honesty is what counted.

He was by no means in capable of romance, in fact when he did it he did it extremely well. After all Tony Stark had a long history of charming and certainly had the means to fund such a hobby, but Pepper particularly enjoyed knowing that he put more effort in now because it was just for her. He wasn’t gallivanting around having as many one night stands as his stamina could handle, and Pepper had had quite enough, over the years, of showing those women the door. Surprisingly Pepper didn’t worry that much about him cheating on her. Yes, the idea had crossed her mind, she wasn’t perfect, but Tony was a different man. If anyone would notice it, it was her. Naturally the tabloid rags still tried to get photos of him with any woman and make a salacious story of it but Pepper simply didn’t read them. She had better things to be doing. Still Pepper was always taken by surprise, and rather touched, when he did make romantic gestures and she smiled as he wrapped an arm around her waist.

She wasn’t stupid though. At his questioning, Pepper lifted her eyebrows lightly in an expression that irrefutably translated as ‘...c’mon.’ Pepper started to grin as he finally admitted that he did have an ulterior motive however her smile froze in its growing, eyes widening as the faceplate slid down sharply. Oh no. No, no, no, God, no! ”Tony!” Pepper tried to protest but his arm tightened and he took off. Pepper threw her arms around his neck quickly, ducking her face against his chest with her eyes tightening closed. She clung to him for dear life, even though he’d flown her at far greater speeds from the situation called for a rescue, and she made a noise that could only be a squeak. Her heart thrummed in her chest, having dropped the metal tube but fortunately kept hold of the rose, and it was only cautiously that Pepper opened her eyes when she felt solid ground, stomach still located somewhere in her ankles. She’d never been a fan of flying. Tony was definitely the thrill-seeker of the pair.

It still took a moment for Pepper to lift her head warily, glancing around through strewn red hair to check that they were safe and he wasn’t about to jump into flight again. Glancing around, Pepper frowned to realise they were on the roof and released Tony slowly, brushing her hair from her eyes to tuck behind her ears. She continued to look round to her left before stopping at the sight and smiling. Her eyes flashed to Tony and back before she approached the table and cushion-y seating area with a smile. ”What did you do?” She murmured softly, more curiously than anything and smiled back at him, rather beaming now. He suggested she sit and Pepper walked back towards him and leaned up to give him another quick kiss. ”Thank-you.” She whispered.

With that Pepper let him go and wandered over to sit down amongst the soft pillows, sinking into them. The pain in her feet rushed back as it was relieved and her body began to relax. She slipped off her heels and after a few moments of waiting for Tony, stood and placed the rose into the small vase with a smile before returning to the cushion and curling up against one a little, patiently. Her eyes moved from the rose towards the sky, the stars so prominent out here without streetlight glare and she exhaled slowly. She was perfectly content...much better than a bubble bath.

To admit he was getting himself into a relationship that seemed more permanent was not only difficult, it was downright impossible. Tony was getting older every day. Broken bones, heavy bruising, and a strong like of alcohol— he had to admit he was getting older every time he walked out of the mansion. Two weeks had been gone before he knew it, maybe three, and it wasn't kind of him to ignore Pepper. If she came to see him Tony hadn't noticed. The mess he left, the lack of order — it probably didn't speak well of him. But he was doing his best and this little romantic stunt was showing it. Pepper kissing him was a great sign; even better when she took his words to heart and headed for the little comfort zone he'd built. He took that as a very good signal to do what he needed to do. "I thought of what a terrible, horrible partner I've been not just to everyone but to you. I don't care about making it up to them. I was worried about you and just... I wanted to apologize." Which was a hard thing coming from the famous Tony Stark. It was his moment to get out of the suit and into something less comfortable — Tony always believed his suit was the safest place. Leaving her to the rooftop seemed a little familiar to him, like the time he'd left her on the roof during that Firefighter's Honoring party thing. She'd wanted a martini and he'd gone to get it, forgetting all about her and leaving her there to rot, so-to-speak. Hopefully she wasn't still mad at him but he had every intention of coming back this time.

While she settled into the cushions he took off, directing himself to the rear of the mansion. A small area near the edge of the back porch opened, metallic doors flickering with hologram as it revealed the entrance to Tony's personal lair workshop. It was a place to store, escape, and work. Having people who counted on him, people who expected him to work with others as a team — it was a drag. People wanted Iron Man, not the Avengers, and Iron Man would deliver. Of course if Directory Fury had anything to say about it Tony would be a little lapdog to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America. Tony had found it was harder to get along with the rest of the team after he'd given in to assisting the Office of National Emergency. Giving some of the blueprints for his armor to the United States government probably branded him a traitor amongst the superhero community. Either way he knew it was a good idea. They couldn't be there all the time, and that little thing with the mutant lizard in the middle of New York City a month ago had been testament to that. Tony was only human, just like the rest of them, and with the overabundance of magic and aliens starting to show their scaly hides it was getting harder as the days moved on. Besides, the Office of National Emergency was a good idea; one Fury couldn't touch with all the power he possessed. A civilian agency working for the government was difficult at best; lenient and simultaneously dictator at worst.

Tony was prepared for this madness to subside and the world would know his being a hero was more important than a superhero team. And it was a nice boost to his overly-saturated ego anyway. Mechanical arms appeared from beneath floor panels to remove pieces of armor as Tony stepped inside. The chest plate was unbolted before removal of other pieces commenced. Once Tony was relieved of his suit he grabbed the Stark phone from his desk and snapped his fingers. "JARVIS." Consoles flickered to life, holographic computer monitors appearing seemingly in midair. "Yes, sir?" Tony smirked with his response. "Order some Thai. Oh, and bring it to the roof." He was off before JARVIS could respond, up the stairs and up again; up until he reached the ladder to the attic and up some more.

The air outside, chilly as it was, didn't stop him from joining Pepper on the "couch", slinging his arm back and over her shoulders. "JARVIS is ordering Thai. Hope you don't mind. There's a blanket if you're cold, you know." He reached over his side and drew it up, spreading it out over Pepper and only slightly over himself. "So, what do you think?" Approval or absolute adoration was agreeable, but Tony wanted her honest opinion. Was she happy to see him doing something that wasn't reckless (physically), though emotionally this could have been a huge disaster. He didn't share what he had been up to, but this was an excellent start. Tony wasn't the most romantic of men. Sure he could be charming, sometimes very alluring, but he was starting to realize his past endeavors of conquering women like he used to conquer other companies was like a black mark. He missed his playboy days sometimes but this was turning a new leaf for him. Pepper had always been there for him, had been most of his family and more-so than even his father had been. Pepper meant the whole world to him and he was starting to show it. Proving he was a good CEO was one thing, a superhero the complete opposite. But being a good boyfriend? That's what counted.

It was in Pepper’s nature to worry. To her credit it was precisely why she was so good at almost everything she did. She was efficient, punctual, hyper-organised, successful, all because she worried about what would happen if she wasn’t – and admittedly rather exaggerated the consequences in her own head. She was a first-rate worrier, only more so about Tony but considering his record for being rather reckless, it was important that one of them was. In fact, that was precisely why she smiled a little bit to hear him say out loud that he worried about her. Pepper had never entirely suspected he didn’t, it was rather implied in their relationship, but it wasn’t always easy for him to say these things explicitly. There were plenty of things she couldn’t say explicitly either for that matter, but worrying wasn’t one of them. Everything he said only made her a little more anxious though. Okay maybe he hadn’t been the most present lately and it was great that he was trying to make up for it but Pepper didn’t want him thinking he was a ‘horrible’ person. He carried enough guilt as it was, without her being the source of more. She never wanted to be that when he was trying so hard to make amends with the world.

Working together naturally complicated things but Pepper really was trying to get the balance between pushing him to make sure work was seen to and being the part of comforting, attentive girlfriend. She didn’t want to get in his way of course, and she helped run the business and liaise with the government. She protected him, as much as was possible, from the media and more importantly from himself, but she knew that his work with O.N.E had complicated a great deal for the team and SHIELD but she agreed with his reasoning. She was a realist and not only could Tony, nor any Avenger, be everywhere saving everyone at once...but she didn’t want him to be. Pepper watched him fly off the rooftop to get out of the suit and she sighed. She liked the suit, it was a work of genius, and she liked Iron Man but she loved Tony...well....she thought she did...hadn’t exactly done the three little words out loud thing yet. The public was ruining Iron Man though. All the bureaucracy and media spin, she understood the necessity of course but Tony had wanted to help people and make up for what he’d done. He might not agree, and quite frankly Pepper didn’t care, if it were up to her he had already made up for it more than enough.

The red-head smiled quickly as Tony returned, trying to push such anxious thoughts from her mind and focus all her attention on him, and enjoying one of these rare times just to the pair of them. She sat straighter so he could sit down and get comfortable and smiled as his arm went around her. It was completely girly and cliché, she knew, but she felt so safe with Tony right beside her, probably moreso out of the suit than in it. Iron Man always suggested there was some kind of danger imminent whereas Tony Stark made her think there was possible for some lying in bed, drinking champagne, dozing wrapped in his arms. She was very much for that plan. Pepper smiled as he pulled the blanket over them, ”Thank-you. This...” She glanced around them for a moment, the stars, the rooftop, her rose. ”...is perfect.” Leaning in Pepper kissed him softly. She’d entirely intended it to just be the one but it was far too easy to relax against him slowly, tilt her head and continue to kiss him. Finally their lips parted and she lifted a hand to brush the back of her fingers across his cheekbone gently. She didn’t need the fancy restaurants or expensive gifts. Just his time, though she supposed when it came to Tony Stark that was pretty expensive too.

”So-” Pepper remarked with a smile, trailing her fingers up from his cheekbone to card through the side of his hair gently. ”-what’s up with you? How are you?”
